Oui, oui...I've seen it in my workplace. There's a sweet, little Hispanic woman that wouldn't harm a fly but whenever she's having a conversation in her native tongue, the other patrons say foul things, speculate as to whether or not she's legal, and suggest she learn English. It's a miracle what you can hear when people think you're either not paying attention and/or can't understand them.

sometimes yeah, i find it rude when you're talking to someone and they start talking away in their own tongue when someone else comes over - because you aren't sure what theyre saying, and you're suddenly no longer included in that conversation. but i've no problem speaking gaelic with a fellow irishman if im given the chance.

Those cases, I can understand, certainly. My issue with it is when the person either doesn't know English that well and/or when it's a private conversation that you never had a part in. I keep my nose clean, don't cause problems, and occasionally mix the two languages but yet, even though I have reason, I'm met with hostility. The entire thing is just...confusing and upsetting, I suppose.

i can understand why you'd find it upsetting, i think you just need to get used to the area, it's not as bad as it first seems.

I would hope that it gets better. It wouldn't be pleasant to put up with it for the remaining duration of my schooling. If you like, I could bring you some refreshments. I hear those at the precinct aren't particularly refreshing.
