I DON'T SHINE IF YOU DON'T SHINE A hot breeze hit Wyatt as he exited the local Starbucks where he'd just finished his shift. Pulling his small bag up higher on his shoulder, he glanced down at his watch; it was around seven in the evening and somehow Crystal Lake still managed to stay as warm as it had been all day. While he'd only gone out during his few breaks, the complaint of how hot it was outside followed by a request for a nice cup of iced coffee had been a constant all day, and now standing outside he almost wished he'd thought to pick one up himself. But no matter, he'd be late to the recording studio if he went back and got one now and he wasn't sure if he'd remembered to book the short half hour he usually requested around this time. It was always the only time he could even get anyway, and he wasn't about to pass it up for an iced coffee. Despite how delightful it sounded at the current time. A few minutes later Wyatt stood outside of the recording studio's entrance; silently he reminded himself to buy a used car soon so he wouldn't have to walk everywhere. Grasping the handle of the door he pulled it open slowly and peeked inside; it seemed pretty quiet which was always a good sign. He carefully made his way over to the second door which lead to the studio itself and took out the key he'd been given a couple months ago when he'd first expressed interest in experimenting with the studio. Twisting it in the lock he pulled the door open and turned on the lights as he walked in. He was met with absolute dead silence - perfect. Throwing his bag somewhat carelessly next to the door, he sat down in front of the mixing console and let himself take it all in. Sometimes this place felt a bit like heaven, especially when it was air conditioned and included a beautiful console. this sucked buuut also keeping it short and sweet

that one thing. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 330px; background-color:#af9ea8; padding:0px;] With her hands tucked into the pockets of her long, loose fitted cardigan, Reece was set. The evening was warmer than most, but seeing as summer was definitely in play, the heat was certainly expected. But the British native hadn’t been all too aware of just how hot this place could get. Her manager had her booked in for a little time down at the studio, just to work out some vocals; at least, he’d told her he had. She was running late though, after finishing her afternoon vocal classes, she’d made her way home for a quick cool off shower, and a change of clothes. She’d changed from a pair of print jeans, into a pair of high waisted shorts, with a loose fitting blouse tucked in at the waist, a pair of tennis shoes on her feet and her hair down around her face in loose, wavy curls. Nothing out of the ordinary for the girl – but she was sure by the end of the night she’d regret the outfit choice, because no matter what season, the night always grew colder, especially when you were close to a large body of water.
She’d locked up the small, run down car and headed up the steps to the building, playing with the handle a moment she pushed the door open and made her way inside. It was quiet; it didn’t seem like anyone was here, but as she wandered down the hallway, she could finally hear someone. They were loud, but they seemed to be working on something, or doing something. She wasn’t sure exactly if her manager was meeting her hear or not, but she twisted the handle into the studio and paused a moment. did you book the space? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure my manager had me in for a little time tonight. I could be wrong.. I’m pretty awful at remembering the little details. Pausing, she took a hesitant step back, shaking her head slowly. you know? It’s alright, you use the space. It’s not even a problem.

I DON'T SHINE IF YOU DON'T SHINE Wyatt was happily immersed in his work within minutes of arriving at the studio and didn't expect any interruptions. There was some sort of a weird calming effect the entire place had on him which he had to suspect was what druggies felt when they got high. A music high was and would always be perfectly fine with him - even if half the money he seemed to make went towards booking the damn space for even just a short amount of time. But he'd been able to convince himself it would all be worth it in the end, with the experience he'd be able to go places. He twisted one of the faders and absentmindedly tapped his finger along the edge of the console. He'd been able to download a virtual mixing console the other day on his laptop but it was cheap but in price and quality, nothing compared to the real deal. A voice knocked Wyatt out of his thoughts and concentration, and he looked up to see seemingly sweet curly haired brunette standing a little ways away. His brow furrowed a bit at her words and he quickly stood up before she could dismiss herself, no, no you're absolutely fine. He shook his head slightly and let out a small sigh, if anything it's probably my fault. I wasn't sure if I'd remembered to book a time today anyway but no one was around so I assumed I'd be fine. I can always come back sometime later. He smiled lightly at the girl and raised an eyebrow as he reset the adjustments and went to pick up his bag, you're also probably here to actually do something worthwhile? It hadn't meant to come out as a question but ended up that way, and he didn't take it back. -

that one thing. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 330px; background-color:#af9ea8; padding:0px;] She had been looking forward to getting some more work down on her tracks, no, she was not signed to any label. Together though, she was producing an EP with her manager, that they would hopefully manage to get around to some proper labels, in hopes of signing her to someone who could get her out there and known. She had the potential; she just lacked the self confidence that was required for the position. Another thing they’d been working on recently, but to no avail, she was still the same reece carroway, nervous and quiet. She didn’t think it was a bad thing, but personality made a huge difference in the industry, and she was severely lacking in the star personality that she was supposed to have.
no, no... It’s fine. It’s alright. It’s just... well my manager isn’t exactly going to be too pleased if I don’t actually get something down tonight – that being said, he’s not here anyway, and I have no doubt in my mind that he’s far too busy to show his face. a small smile curled her lips a moment, before she sunk her teeth down into her lip, drawing out a sigh as she glanced over him briefly. I’m sure your work is worthwhile though, but… you aren’t singing? Or playing an instrument… I’m assuming you’re more into the producing aspect of things. So maybe you want to help me? We can help each other. her brows raised lightly, and she reached into the tote at her side, producing a CD case, holding it towards him, and wagged it briefly in his direction. We can share the space, if you’d like. Unless you’d rather spend some time on your own. A slight grin tugged at her lips, as she slipped the vest from her shoulders, folded it over her bag and set the bag down beside the door, before her hands wound themselves in front of herself, fingers squeezing together. So, what do you say?

I DON'T SHINE IF YOU DON'T SHINE He felt rather terrible, and was still trying to figure out how he'd forgotten to book the space which was really the only reason this was happening. It'd happened once before to him, but the person ended up leaving early anyway to take care of their sick child - or something along that line. Wyatt tipped his head slightly as he took the cd the girl was currently offering him. There seemed to be something rather genuine about her, at first glance she seemed to be the type who might throw a tantrum if she didn't get her way, but here she was offering to share the space with him. His first impressions were never very accurate anyway. He had to assume she was a singer of some genre, and she had a manager which had to mean she was pretty serious about it. That was rather impressive, to say the least. Yeah, well I'm not exactly established but music production is definitely a large interest of mine. He shrugged and couldn't let a smile work it's way onto his face, that would be super actually. I've been working on my own for far too long now anyway. I'm Wyatt by the way, he held out his hand towards the girl, always such a pleasure to awkwardly meet someone in a recording studio which I'd forgotten to book. He grinned and gestured toward the cd which he now held in his right hand, Mind if I take a listen? For all he knew she could be an opera singer, which wouldn't work out very well. He'd been trying out mostly pop, electronic, etc., and classical was far from his reach at this point. -

that one thing. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 330px; background-color:#af9ea8; padding:0px;] well she began, as she paced a moment, glancing over the dials, and the knobs on the board, before she looked back at him. I have no idea what any of this is anyway, and I can’t very well lay down any kind of tracks without someone who has at least a basic knowledge of this stuff.. she leaned against the edge of it, the palms of her hands cupping the side; so... I don’t know, I think at least this way we’re able to help each other out. Right? a small smile spread over her lips and she glanced back to the glassed in boxed studio, lit up like a stage.
The worst he could say, would be no, which just meant she’d have the space to herself, although she didn’t mind that. Actually having someone to talk to over this… production stuff, this would set her mind at ease. Considering her manager was nowhere in sight. So, in the end she probably would have had to leave early, take off and find herself doing something else instead of wasting everyone’s time here. He seemed nice though, even if they’d only spoken a little, for if he wasn’t; he could have easily told her to leave.
it’s nice to meet you, Wyatt. I’m Reece she smiled slightly it’s not a big deal though, don’t stress about it. I’d have needed the help anyway, so why not just make a better use of the space while we can? she straightened up, glancing at the CD in his hand, and nodded briefly. sure, yeah, give it a listen. It’s just the basic track though; I’ve got to get the lyrics down. But I guess it’ll give you a feel for the music anyway.

I DON'T SHINE IF YOU DON'T SHINE wyatt smiled at her and simply nodded in agreement. if this girl was any good, it could be a pretty interesting deal. if she wasn't quite so great, it would simply end up as a small waste of time and could be awkward on his end. most of what he'd done recently was remixing prerecorded vocal and instrumental tracks which he'd required through friends whom he knew he could trust to get a good solid track from. either way though, he'd at least have a nice time trying things out with live vocals, it had been a while since he'd had this kind of an opportunity. plus, auto-tuning, as much as he hated to admit it, could be a true savior sometimes.
reece, what a charming name. at her permission, he slipped the disc into the player and pressed play. true to her word it was a basic track, and almost right up his alley. perfect, he muttered, mostly to himself. yes, i think this could be an amazing opportunity. he grinned turning back towards reece, you must be pretty serious about music i take it? recording tracks, having a manager and everything. you've also got that very, i don't know, next big star look going on. he hadn't really ever met anyone in the area who was truly serious about music, unless they were around his age and still attending college. most people moved out to los angeles or new york to continue their dreams. wyatt just wanted to get some experience in before he became too serious about it. otherwise he could totally flop. reece seemed to still be establishing herself as well, from her looks, which he had to admit were pretty flawless, she seemed to be around his age. so, at the very least he could relate to her pretty well if all held true. -

that one thing. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 330px; background-color:#af9ea8; padding:0px;] A small smile crossed her lips and she leaned forward against the counter, watching him a moment as he put the CD in. reece isn’t that great a name, I guess it’s alright. Most people assume it’s a guy’s name, after all. nodding her head slightly, she glanced over at the recording box, and straightened up again, her eyes finding his face a moment, she glanced over herself as her brows rose. I do? Well… I’m serious about it, yes, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for all of my life, and I’ve kind of got the opportunity to record stuff, in hopes of actually being picked up by a label. I have nothing to complain about, that’s for sure. she smoothed her hands over the front of her top and glanced up at his face again but my manager thinks I don’t have the personality, or “attitude” for it. ‘cause I’m quiet most of the time, he thinks I’ll have a bad stage presence. with a slight shrug of the shoulders, she turned the door handle that led into the box and smiled a little but I think talent, and ability aren’t always reliant on something like attitude. I think it’s all got to do with dedication… and the actual talent she raised her brows as she let the door swing shut behind her, ducking into the booth.
She fixed the set of headphones over her ears, and glanced up at him through the glass, as she nodded for him to press play. Timing her lyrics, with the music, she belted out her song. Her voice carrying heavily, and fiercely. She might not have had the attitude, but she most certainly had the talent, and she wasn’t about to hold back now. As the song drew to an end, she tugged the headphones off of her ears and watched him through the glass a moment. so? |

I DON'T SHINE IF YOU DON'T SHINE reece, he said the name several times in his head, i don't think i've met any fellows with that name. i just think of reese's peanut butter cups. he shrugged, smiling as he listened to her. she was right, she didn't seem to have that fiery, fearsome and driven side most artists these days did. thanks to social networks such as twitter, their diva-ish side showed even more, and that was something wyatt was preparing himself for. if you ask me, i think as long as you have the drive to get somewhere along with the talent, the charismatic side can always be faked enough to make it look real. flipping the chair around, he sat back down in front of the console and slipped on his own headphones to hear her in the booth. what came out of the speakers surprised him greatly. she didn't have the usual 'i can hit those high notes' celine dion style vocals, but something a bit more unique, adding an edge. the song was a bit rough around the edges but she'd already made it clear what she was doing was a work in progress. as it came to an end he raised his eyebrows and sat staring ahead of him until her voice pierced his thoughts. wow, he nodded slowly, that was awesome, you really have an amazing voice. wyatt tugged on the edge of his shirt, feeling almost out of place. reece was really great, almost too great. if they worked together, the hardest part would definitely be on his shoulders. taking a deep breath in, he shrugged the momentary stupor off and let out a small chuckle, labels would be crazy not to sign you. seriously. you sure you're still willing to take a chance and have me help you? -

that one thing. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width: 330px; background-color:#af9ea8; padding:0px;] I guess it depends on how it’s spelt as well, mines more like the chocolate – but with a C instead of an S. she added lightly, a thoughtful tone slipping into her words. that’s exactly what I think sometimes, I don’t want to have to turn into one of those...musicians who basically ignore their fans because they’re supposed to have such an attitude. I want to be up there on the stage, but I still want to be able to have a conversation with my fans. she never wanted to be another diva in the music scene, she wanted to get her songs out there and heard, and she wanted to enjoy the lime light without letting it go to her head. She wanted to be known as the singer who spent time with her fans, not because she had to, but because she genuinely cared about the people who got her to where she was. It was safe to say in times like this when someone new was listening to her music; she did feel mostly insecure about her ability and her talent. The songs weren’t going to be to everyone’s liking, and her voice wasn’t on the level of someone like beyonce, strong and fierce. She brought a unique quality to the lyrics, her own personal style that was definitely quirky and upbeat, while some would say it wasn’t really a good voice; she had the ability, and the dreams to go far with it. you think so? I mean, well I’m definitely no beyonce or anything, but i… I think I have the potential to be something new, bring a new sound to the scene she shrugged a little, fiddling with the edge of her shorts a small smile falling over her lips. still up for giving your help? Definitely, certainly… what better way to learn than being hands on with some producing, besides, like I said – I’d be hopeless in here without someone to point me in the right direction. So, any pointers? |

I DON'T SHINE IF YOU DON'T SHINE for some reason i'm a bit tempted to call you rice, he chuckled with ease. well, just watch your back. from what i can tell, people will totally fake who they are just so they can be your next best friend. wyatt shrugged and and pushed back from the console to stand up. but then again, what do i know. one reason he'd never been too fond of the idea of living the celebrity lifestyle was because it always seemed to change people so dramatically. innocent kids grew up to be partying sluts and sweet girls or guys came out trashy and selfish. he had no idea what happened behind the scenes and hopefully never would, but whatever it was that they went through, he hated it. reece seemed sweet and down to earth, the opposite of all the divas in the industry. all wyatt really knew was that you had to be merciless, and somehow he didn't see that in the brunette. then again, he'd only just met her and for all he knew she was having an off day, or a very polite day. well, i think there are very few on beyonce's level. he smiled and shrugged, pointers, well, i'm not sure i can think of anything right here and now, vocally you're a bit different and i like that, i really just don't want to tamper with your natural sound too much. and well, he paused and glanced at her briefly, you're hot, people love musicians who are hot. i mean, just look at britney spears. if she was old and wrinkled she wouldn't do nearly as well as she has. he laughed and looked away from her, but yeah, no pointers i can think of off the top of my head. finallyyy, sorry
