| [atrb=border,0,true] It was the same thing every day, get up around five in the afternoon, head out to a bar, and drink till four am. He never changed his ways and everyone knew where to find him. Most people looked down at Ethan for this life style, at the way he acted, but many of them just didn't understand what happened in his past, didn't get what he had been through, how he failed all the people around him already and how nothing mattered any more. They didn't get that this was more of a life than anything else. After Ethan had lost his wife to two a crazed murders who also tried to take Ethan's life, he was left with nothing, except the wish that he had died and not his wife. His wife had a family, had people who loved her, friends, he on the other hand had no one, he didn't have family, friends, all he had was her and she was gone and ever since she had been taken away from him, he had nothing to live for and often wondered why he tried.
Siting there at the bar, Ethan started to twirl his half empty glass, his eyes locked on a spot on the bar. He wasn't paying much attention to the things around him, lost in his own thoughts, wishing his buzz would finally kick in. He was already mostly done with his forth glass and he didn't feel a thing. That was the bad thing about his drinking problem, it was taking him longer and longer to get drunk. That was probably because his body was building up a resistance to it all. It was one of those things that after you do it a lot or have it in your a life a lot, you get use to it and it takes longer for the effects to kick in. Looking up, he quickly brought the glass to his lips and finished it before waving the bartender over for another "Um.. I'm sorry Ethan, but were not looking for trouble tonight, that's enough for you here. If you want more, please go somewhere else." He said softly, before Ethan looked up at him. "I don't even have a buzz and if Iv already been here this long you mid as well give me another. I'm not being annoying yet and you didn't refuse me when I first got here so..." He said looking up at the bartender who walked off to make him another drink. "Thanks dick." He said as he took the glass when the bartender returned. Shaking his head, he went back to looking at the spot, ignoring the things around him or the fact that the bartender was now on the phone making a call to someone.

she sat down on the couch and got herself comfortable, blanket on and tv adjusted to some reality show. she felt her body slowly slipping out of conciousness as the phone let out a loud trilling ring. oh sh- she managed to get out before nearly falling off the couch from fright. she stood up and ran to the phone picking it up, hello? she answered. it was a gentleman from a local bar. he was complaining about ethan. hailey felt herself let out a very very annoyed sigh. the bartender offered to call the police but hailey refused, and offered to pick him up. hanging up the phone hailey headed back to the tv. she turned it off, blew out the candles and looked at the picture. you owe me sis. she pointed at her sister and walked back down the hallway to micah's room. she opened the door and the toddler stirred.
micah sweetie, we have to go pick up uncle ethan. the toddler sat straight up. he did look up to his uncle, his little mind didnt know of all that was going on. he grabbed his slippers and slipped them on. hailey carried him to the car, setting him in his car seat she started towards the bar. she sighed and didnt know wether to bring micah in or leave him in the car. she nodded her head and locked the doors. meek, dont let anyone in but me or uncle ethan alright? micah nodded. he was used to this by now. hailey had been called many nights to pick up ethan. she opened the door to the club and was greeted by the scent of smoke and regret. it only took her a few moments to spot him. she rolled her eyes and headed over. she leaned next to him looking at him. lets make this easier then last time ok ethan? she crossed her arms and looked at him. lets go. she said sliding money at the bartender thank you she said looking back at ethan.

| [atrb=border,0,true] The place wasn't packed, but it had more people in it than normal. It wasn't like it was ever packed, it was a run down bar with pretty much held the regulars, locals, and the few stray tourist. It was a run down dump, but Ethan liked it pretty okay. He also liked the fact that no one ever sat next to him when he was here. Probably because he had been known to pick a fight or two over the man times he had showed his face around these parts. He didn't use to be the kind of man to fight, however after the loss of his wife, nothing about him was really the same.
Hearing a voice speaking, he glanced up over at the bartender who was now on the phone. He was glancing at Ethan nodding every now and then and Ethan knew who he was on the phone with now problem. It was Hailey. This wasn't the first, nor probably the last time people had called her to pick him up when he was drunk. In fact it had become a regular thing. Ethan might have felt bad if he was still in his old mood, however he wasn't. Plus it wasn't like he asked Hailey to come 'save him'. In fact he didn't want nor needed her too.
Still looking at the stop on the bar, Ethan twirled his glass around before putting it to his lips and finishing it off. All he was feeling was a tingle, but still no buzz. This sucked. He was going to have to deal with Hailey, pretty much sober, which was no fun task. Ethan could already picture the ride back home, her telling him the same lecture she had told him time and time again while he ignored it. He could only imagine what she was going to say when he asks her to pull over at a gas station so he can by a pack. That was sure to get her going. He knew it was never going to work, but he was going to give it a shot. He had no other option, not unless he was going to lean over the bar and grab one of the bottles before leaving. He would only take a half bottle, which wouldn't be enough to cause the man to call the cops, but it would cause a lot of yelling, however it would hold Ethan over till morning.
He was just finishing his plans when he heard the voice next to him. Rolling his eyes Ethan slumped back into his chair, muttering lightly "Oh come on now, what would be the fun in that?" Shaking his head the man slid off his bar stool, pulling at his hoody. "Fine, fine, I'm going." He commented lightly, before reaching over and grabbing one of the half empty bottles and heading for the door. He didn't wait for the man to start yelling nor stopped to see if Hailey was following, he only started making his way to the car, knocking on the window door "Open up Micah." He called before opening the care door and sliding in. closing the door behind him, he sat back, waiting for Hailey to join them.

why she put up with this? for her sister. for ethan. for her family. hailey was always the strong one growing up. she was never emotional, and was the stubborn one in the family. everyone expected her to be there when things went wrong, and when her sister died, she had no time to be sad because everyone needed her support. micha, ethan, her parents. sometimes it got overwhelming taking care of so many people, but she managed to do it and kept a smile on her face. most of the time. this time however, she didnt feel like having a smile. she was cold, tired, irritated and wanted ethan to just cooperate for once. she let out a sigh and headed towards the car. she was debating how to handle this situation at hand. she wasnt going to take him home, she was going to take him to her apartment. as usual. where he would pass out on the couch and micha would wake him up in the morning. he would resent hailey and they would argue then he would leave without so much as a thank you.
hailey rolled her eyes and instead of going to her side headed to ethans side of the car. she tapped the window then opened the door, realizing it was unlocked. dump it ethan. now. she pointed at the bottle before crossing her arms. there was no way in hell he was bringing that near micha, he would have to be demented. not only because it was alcohol, but because micha's father was an alcoholic. she didnt need him seeing it this young, especially if it was going to run in the family like this. hailey paused and waited for him to dump it. she felt herself getting more and more aggitated as time went on.

| [atrb=border,0,true] The night air that hit Ethan on his way out of the bar was cool. It want cold outside, no summer was starting, however there was a cool breeze to the summer air and it felt nicer than the heat that built up in the bar he had just walked out of. The bottle was hanging from his fingers as he staggered his way to the car. He wasn't drunk, so it wasn't a drunk stagger, but a tired and annoyed one. He no more wanted to get into that car then he didn't want a drink. This was starting to become a routine that was getting old. Why couldn't Hailey just call a cab or not come at all? A nice ride in the back of a cop car was more pleasant than a ride with Hailey. Even a night on a hard seat was better than a night at Hailey's. He always woke up with a hang over, pounding head, and Micah bouncing around. Yes he loved Micah, he was family and the only one who didn't look at him as if he had lost his mind, however the kid had no clue what a hang over was or how much it hurt. Ethan was sure that Hailey even had a good laugh inside, each morning Ethan woke up to Micah. She knew, she had to know how bad it hurt his head and she probably loved it.
Tapping on the care window he waited for the kid to unlock the doors before climbing in. Slamming the car door, he moved to kind of curl up in the seat, pulling his hood onto his head "Hey kiddo." He muttered lightly as he clutched the bottle to his chest, watching and waiting for Hailey to come out of the bar. He knew she hated the place and the looks the ones inside gave her, that was Ethan's revenge for the mornings that followed. He had a kick at her disgusted face as she made her way out of the bar, right on cue. Closing his eye, Ethan listened, waiting to hear the driver side door open, but it never came, instead there was a tap on the window next to his head and before he could even stop it Hailey was pulling the door open.
Raising a brow, Ethan pulled the bottle closer to his body, moving a hand to stop her if she tried to go for it. "No. This is for when I get home, my home." putting emphasis on the my. "I don't want to go to your place tonight, I'm not even drunk so I don't need a baby sitter." Moving the bottle, he moved to put it under the seat. "There, it can stay there when Micah cant see it and you can just go one and take me home and all of this can be over." Ethan knew she want going for it. If he went home he would get drunk and he would need that baby sitter, at least in her eyes. If he went to her place he would have to stay sober, because she wasn't going to allow the alcohol, at least that's what she thought, however Ethan was already starting his plan of how to make sure he still got his drink. He was getting drunk tonight, come hell or high water.
Moving a hand up, still trying to protect the bottle that was now under the seat, he moved his hands in a waving motion, as if shooing her away "Now go on, come drive me home." He knew he would probably pay for that one, he could see the girl getting more and more agitated with every passing moment, but he didn't care, he was having a bit of fun as he watched it grow in her. Its what she got for trying to treat him like a kid who needed a baby sitter. Acting like she really cared what happened to him. If he remembered correctly she didn't like him when her sister was alive, so there was no need to act like she cared now.

all she knew was that she didnt want him to be alone, not tonight, not ever. he needed help as much as he wanted to deny it, she knew it. and as frustrating as it was to get him to understand she wa trying to help, she couldnt quit. besides he was the only male figure micah had left. letting out a sigh she answered for him. deal. slamming the car door shut she walked back around to her door and got in the car. turning the radio down she buckled up and turned to look at micah. she turned slightly and looked at ethan. i know he annoys you in the mornings, but you know he loves you. she paused briefly. besides me, you're all he has. and with that she started to back out of the parking spot. the car ride home was awkward, silent. she didnt say one word to him, nor did she look at him. she kept both hands on the wheel and when stopped at a red light she looked out the window.
finally pulling up to her apartment she parked the car and got out, still not saying a word to him. she picked up micah from the backseat, he stirred and fussed. meek, youre getting to big for this she groaned carrying the child to the steps. once inside her apartment she walked in her room and set him down on the bed. tucking him in she grabbed a few blankets and a pillow and headed into the living room. she glanced over at ethan you know where his room is, feel free to drink until you pass out. i dont care, just dont vomit because im NOT cleaning that up. she sat down on her leather couch leaning forward, she still had some wine left over from earlier. taking a sip she let out a sigh and stared at the picture of her, her sister and her own pregnant belly. letting out a soft sigh she looked down in her lap.
she knew that she had to take care of ethan, but it was hard. he didnt want anything to do with her, he didnt want her help and he didnt want to get better. as much as she tried and tried to get her family to help they wouldnt. she was alone really, micah helped in his own little way but it wasnt the same. she shrugged the thought off taking a quick sip of her wine before leaning back on the couch, she let out a soft sigh and closed her eyes rubbing her temples. she had a migraine, and as much as she needed to fall asleep she knew she wasnt going to tonight. she was going to be constantly checking on micah, and ethan to make sure both were ok, and well, alive.
(sorry for the bit...well alot of power playing D:)

| [atrb=border,0,true] Moving his legs to make sure she couldn't fight the bottle from under the seat, Ethan shifted, turning to rest on his shoulder, watching as the girl got frustrated. In the old days he would try to fix it, but he was to tried and hardly cared enough to do anything. Glancing over his shoulder, he turned to see Micah sleeping in his seat and he knew that the kid could wake up at any moment and the last thing they needed was a cranky kid crying. Although Ethan wasn't drunk, he had a hangover from the night before, it would only take a moment to cause his head some pain. Frowning his brows as Hailey turned around and started telling him he was going with her, he started to open his mouth to object before shutting it. The deal didn't sound like much of a deal. He didn't want to go to her place, he wanted to go to his place, the one that was now pretty much empty. "I think I'm good. I would just much rather go home.." Ethan didn't even get much of a chance to finish answering before she was answering for him. Moving back just in time, Ethan watched as the girl told him he was taking the deal and slapped the door in his face.
Sitting back in his seat, he ignored his seat belt as he pulled the bottle from under the seat and went back to holding it, watching as Hailey moved around to her side of the car and got it. Thankful that she turned down the music, he recreated it only moments after as she started to talk. Looking back at the kid again, he watched him for a moment. Ethan use to love kids, after all he had been a teacher and had wanted nothing more than to have a family. However the man never got that and now he never would. Shaking his head lightly, he turned back around and lean against the seat, pulling at the hood of his jacket a little more as he sat there, never taking the time to look over at Hailey. He knew he was a disappointment to her, but there was nothing he could do about it. He was never going to be the uncle Micah needed, after all, he wasn't even part of the family any more.
When they finally pulled up to Hailey's place, Ethan let out a sigh. This had not been at all what he had plan for his night. Shaking his head he got out of the car, following Hailey up to her place. He knew he should have offered to carry Micah for her, especially since he was not drunk, however he had his bottle to carry, since he wouldn't trust her to do so. Standing in the living room as she put Micah to bed in her room, he tried to figure out why she would put herself out for a man she use to hate and probably hate even more now. Making a face at her, rolling his eyes lightly as she told him to head to Micah's room, he started to make his way there slowly. Walking inside, he looked at his bottle for a moment, letting out a sigh and putting it down on the kids dresser. It looked so weird in a child's room. In fact it looked weird in the house period.
Making his way over to the window he looked out of it for a moment before turning around and heading out of the room, making his way back through the house slowly, trying not to look at the pictures on the wall. As he walked up behind the girl he could see her massaging her temples. "Sorry for causing another long night." Ethan said lightly as he moved around to sit on another seat other than the one Hailey was sitting on. It was probably one of the first times he apologized to anyone since his wives death.

after her sister had been killed, things changed. she noticed that ethan changed. she wanted to help him, and her family practically disowned her for helping him, and bringing him around micah. but she knew that he could change, she knew that even if she didnt do it, he could get clean and start over. as she pulled into the apartment complex she was hoping that it wouldnt be another long night of hearing him tossing and turning. regardless she knew that she was going to be awake, checking on him constantly to make sure he was, one still alive and two, not trying to leave her sight. she was getting sick of him, but she wasnt going to let him leave. she wasnt going to let him hurt himself, or worse someone else that he ran into.
once inside the comfort of her own home and tucked micah away she watched as ethan went into the childs room. it was odd seeing a grown man go into a childs bedroom, but it was better then him sleeping on the couch and being miserable and just plain rude when micah woke him up the next day. she knew that he deserved it, she knew he desreved the hangover, but she was going to be nice and let him sleep one night, all the way through. sitting on the sofa she let out a long yawn followed with a sigh. she wasnt sure what to do. she had felt awkward in her own home, and part of her didnt like that. she looked around, sitting up correctly, and looked for something to read, or even something to watch.
hearing micah's door creep open she didnt even look down the hall. it was probably ethan going to the bathroom, and she didnt want to aknowledge him. but when the bathroom door didnt shut she couldnt help but look out of the corner of her eye. feeling him walk behind her she didnt speak but simply looked at the couch, picking at the embroidery that was holding the leather ppieces together. she looked up when he finally broke the silence. he was..apologizing? that was odd. ethan never apologized, let alone to hailey. she simply shrugged. its what i do, i cant just sit there and let you mess your life up ethan she shrugged again. i know you hate me, but im not going anywhere. she looked up at him, locking with his eyes. she wanted him to know that he wasnt alone, and she did genuinely care about him.

Most nights ended with Hailey picking Ethan up, it wasn't really anything new. It was rare that Ethan could escape a bar drunk. Most of them were locals and knew the past of the family. Some of them use to know the old Ethan, the one that once taught their kids and was a good man, so even when he was rude they didn't have the heart to be rude back, something Ethan often took advantage of. However tonight was slightly different, Ethan wasn't drunk. He didn't get a chance. He had finally got a small buzz going, but that was it. This also meant, Ethan didn't have the fight in him to keep up with his normal antics. It was the alcohol that drove him to be just down right rude to someone that was helping it. Its that made him try to jump out of cars, fight who was once his sitter in law, it allowed him say harsh things, but since he didn't have the "juice" in him tonight, he didn't have the fire in him to be so cold to someone who was trying to be so nice. However, that didn't mean he was happy by the idea or feeling any nice warm feelings, he just wasn't being a prick.
The ride home had seemed like a long one. Ethan couldn't help but find his mind wandering. This was the one reason why he drank so much, to keep his mind in check, however, thanks to Hailey that wasn't the case tonight. Looking out the window, watching the world pass by, reminded him how his life passed by so quickly. He had once thought he had forever to do all the things he wanted to do, to build a family, to do all those chores his wife always got on him about, to build that deck, to take that trip, however just like the houses passing by, it was all gone in a flash and something he would never get back. Many people told him in time he would move on, find someone else, make a new family, but it wasn't something he wanted. It was a horrible thought to think about, moving on, finding someone else, making a new family without her. Many people thought Ethan was a heartless man now, however it was there, he had the reminder every morning as he woke up, hoping it had only been a dream and she would be laying next to him safe and sound. That he would be able to roll over, wrap his arms around her, and press his lips to her, that he would be able to get one more chance. However every day instead, he woke up to the feeling that his heart was being ripped for his chest and a wish, a wish that she could come back and it be him who was taken away.
Making his way out of the child's room and into the living room, Ethan took a seat, looking at the glass of wine on the table. What he wouldn't do to have that bottle or the bottle in the child's room. He didn't understand what made him walk away from it, however here he was, leaning back in the chair, without much of a fight. "I don't really need you to be there for me. I don't need anyone. All your doing is waisting your and Micah's lives and there has already been enough loss of life in this family." Ethan's eyes met Hailey's. He hated that she was waisting so much time on him. She had a kid, a kid that Ethan loved, the only thing left in this world he did care about, and she was to busy worried about him to pay much attention to Micah. It was thanks to Ethan that she was dragging the kid out at night to bars, making him sit in locked cars. "You cant keep doing this Hailey. You have to stop dragging Micah out at night. He needs to be able to go a night without having to come pick up a drunk." that comment was probably more for himself or Hailey, however he wouldn't take his own advice, this he knew. "Stop coming after me Hails. I don't want it and you don't need to be doing it." Ethan looked at the girl with a stern face, he meant it. He didn't want the help. He didn't even feel as though he needed it.

maybe it was time to let ethan make his own mistakes, but inside. deep down inside, she knew that she couldnt just not worry about him. it scared her to think of what he could get into when he was alone. she saw how upset he was wether he wanted to admit he was or not. when he came out and sat down with no argument and no word against her hailey was a little bit surprised. she almost half expected him to say something rude to her, or tell her he wanted to go home. but he didnt. she looked at him, when he finally broke the silence to speak. listening to him hailey felt her facial expressions changing. when she finished talking she waited a few moments, letting what he said process in her head before finally speaking back. ethan. im too far involved to just stop caring. im not wasting my time and im sorry that you feel as if i am she paused you are my family, and im not going anywhere. she finished speaking and looked down in her lap.
but the silence was broken once more and she looked up at him. he was telling her how to stop bringing micah out of bed. she wanted to laugh and say well stop making me, but she knew the counter argument. he didnt ask for her help, she did invade and take over. but thats who she was. she was stubborn and was going to help him wether he wanted her to or not. when he finished his sentences hailey shook her head. you can keep sitting here and telling me to stop coming after you, but im not going anywhere. i know you dont want it but you DO need it. she paused and looked at him ethan, you dont need to go through this alone, i dont know how else to tell you this. she knew that it was hard for him but it would be easier if he just opened up to her instead of arguing and resisting.

Thinking about it, Ethan didn't understand Hailey's sudden interest in his life. She didn't care about it before her sister passed. In fact, he was sure she was on the same boat as the rest of her family when her sister and him got married. Ethan remembers his wives family on the phone begging her not to do it. They wouldn't even show up, well not her parents any way, that's how dead set they were against it. The reasons Ethan never understood. No he didn't come from a lot of money, but he wasn't broke either. He was a teacher who also wrote children books. He could take care of a family and was the kind of man who wouldn't cheat or mistreat his wife. Maybe they knew what Ethan hadn't at the time, that when it would come down to it, he wouldn't be able to protect her in the way she would need it the most, however there was no real way for them to know that, was there?
Sitting there in the living room, Ethan felt so out of place. It was a nice place, it had pictures of family on the wall and it had splashes of color to it. It was a home, a real home, one Ethan was no longer use to considering his looked like a pig sty. His had empty bottles, fast food bags, and trash every where. There was months of uncleaned cloths all over the place and anyone who stepped inside, would probably say the place needed to be condemned. It had no images hanging up, Ethan took them down a long time ago and it more or less looked like a place teenagers broke into, got high, before going home. It looked nothing like a place where a once, happy, family lived.
As Hailey started to protest Ethan let out a sigh, shaking his head lightly "Your not to far involved, I'm not your responsibility, I'm my responsibility and no one else, the only person you should be worrying about is your son. I'm a grown man. If this is how I want to finish living out my life what is so wrong with that?" Shaking his head some more, he leaned forward, hitting his hand on the arm of the chair. "That's where your wrong, I am not your family, not any more. That tie ended the moment she died. I don't even understand why you care so god damn much, Its not even like your cared about me when she was alive." His voice was raising and he knew he needed to get it back down to a normal leave, Micah was in the other room trying to sleep.
Leaning back in his chair, Ethan swallowed and looked to the side, that was a bad idea, his eyes landed on a photo of her, his wife, Maggie. His face hardened. Ignoring Hailey he got up and started to make his way over to the photo, stopping just inches from it. It was the one with Maggie and Hailey when she was pregnant. Swallowing he finally found words in response to Hailey's comments from before. "I don't deny that I might need it, but I don't want it. I don't want to live in a world that has her, so if I die from Alcohol poisoning or from driving off the road so be it." turning around Ethan glared at the girl hard "I want to go through this along. You don't even understand I watched her die, I watched the life leave from her eyes why I could do nothing. You couldn't POSSIBLY understand that or help me though that. Your efforts are worthless, so it would be best if you would stop trying." Ethan thought about storming out or back to Micah's room, but instead he only turned around, returning his focus back to the image.

as they sat silently in the living room she looked around. it was weird. ever since her ex left her and micah alone to fend for themselves, hailey had no pictures of men around the house. it was only pictures of her sister, her and micah or her sister and micah. it was actually sickening the more she thought about it. maybe she was the one with the issue. maybe she was the one who couldnt let go. but as much as she tried to, hailey hid the fact that she missed her sister. it made her sick inside to think of what happened, but she didnt think. she just ignored it as much as she could. looking finally back at him as he spoke she sat silently, listening to each word and letting the soak in. she wanted him to have the opportunity to get everything out, because if she cut him off there would be an argument and micah would end up waking up and that wouldnt be pretty.
after he stopped hailey leaned back. when he slammed his arm against the chair she felt herself jump a little. she was used to him getting angry, but it still surprised her every time for some reason. she shook her head, not even considering what to say, it just spilled out. no. i am too far involved. you are my family ethan. you are my brother in law no matter how much you say that is gone now. its never going to be gone. you are micah's uncle ethan and you are my brother in law. you are the man that married my sister. she paused and looked down at her lap and then back up. and i know, i did hate you. i hated you from the moment i met you. i never thought anyone was good enough for mag, but thats who i was. why do i care now? you made her happy ethan. you loved her and she loved you. you gave her what no one else could. she looked down again and fidgeted in her lap before continuing.
im trying to make her happy. im trying to help. i know that you dont want me to and i know youre a grown man. i know that micah doesnt need to be involved but its too late. he loves you, i care about you and- she couldnt even think anymore. everything was starting to sound repetative. she leaned forward and sighed rubbing her temples again. listen. im not going anywhere ok. thats that. she didnt look up until he stood up and walked to the picture of hailey and maggie. she looked up at him and froze. you may not want her to be in this world, but she is. she will always be here ethan. always. if you let her leave then youre just going to hurt yourself even more. she shook her head yes i dont understand, i will never understand what that was like, but she was my sister too. i lost her too. i loved her. you loved her. i saw how happy you made her and it kills me to see you this miserable ethan she felt herself choking up. she had never really talked about losing maggie like this before. she paused a moment and stood up.
walking into the kitchen she reappeared after a few moments and stood next to him setting a picture on the table in front of him. next time you think that no one cares about you, look at this she sniffled and wiped at her eyes before turning on her heels and sitting back on the couch. she pulled her knees to her chest. the picture that she gave him, was from christmas. maggie, ethan, hailey to the far far left and micah. they looked happy. genuinly and truthfully happy. she put her fist to her mouth and stared at the empty fireplace as if it was going to magically catch fire.
don’t you go breaking my pretty little heart |
