Lily felt the cool metal of the keys against her hand, jingling them back and forth. Passing a shop window, she took a brief look at herself, focusing on the new set of house keys and smiled for a brief second. The shopping bag in her other hand held many goodies that she was excited to pick apart when she finally got home. New linens, cute photo frames, a pair of vintage ballet slippers she'd found while rummaging around her favourite recyclable store. They were her little treats now that she finally had the keys to her new apartment and while she had been fearing the day, she'd made a conscious decision that this was a good thing. A new beginning may have been just what she needed. Lily had never lived alone. If she wasn't with her family she was with Raymond and at twenty-three it may have been time for her to know what Independence really felt like.
It was far too easy for her to fall into a gloomy slump. No boyfriend, no family, no one to keep her safe and love her. It was enough to make anyone crack under pressure but Lily was far more fragile than the average girl. She'd had someone telling her what to do for her entire life and had never really made any of her own decisions. She wasn't going to lie, at first the notion of living alone had terrified her to the point of tears and many sleepless nights but some how she'd had a turn around. This afternoon she'd decided she was going to become a whole new person. She'd be a girl with a voice, with an opinion, she'd be a girl that others envied because she was so damn sure of herself. It was a long stretch but so far she was doing good. She'd secured herself a new place to live and she'd gone shopping to buy the things that she wanted and that she'd earned with her own money. Yes, today was the beginning of something new. What better way to celebrate than a latte and a cupcake from her favourite bakery.
Pushing her way into the familiar little bakery, Lily smiled at the delicious scent of baked goods and the warm aura she seemed to pick up. The Hartwood Bakery had captured her heart the minute she'd entered it those long six years ago. She'd never actually grown up with a mother who baked her and her siblings snacks but she imagined this was what they'd tasted like if she did. Walking up to the counter, Lily smiled at the young woman ready to serve her. "Just a latte and one of the strawberry cupcakes please" she spoke rather softly, passing the girl a meek smile as she pointed at the pretty pink cupcake, complete with white frosting and a strawberry too. "How about I give you two for just a few extra dollars?" the girl replied, trying to sell Lily something she really didn't want. "I guess I'll take two then" Lily succumbed immediately. So much for being the new assertive Lily who didn't take crap from anyone. She couldn't even say no t some sixteen year old prom queen. She sighed out loud, feeling a little silly for thinking she could simply change in one day.
The girl followed Lily to her seat, setting down the plate with her two cupcakes and her latte and left her, happy with the generous tip the blonde had left her. It wasn't in her nature to be greedy or use the word 'no'. For all Lily knew the girl was hard up for cash. Deep down she knew she was just making excuses for her own weak streak. Taking a sip of her latte, she stared aimlessly at the cupcake in front of her, dragging a finger through the frosting of one and putting it in her mouth. The sugar rush boosted her spirits a little more but it wasn't much help. Now that she was once again alone with no distraction, she couldn't help but let her mind wander. What the hell was she going to do? What if she got robbed during the night? What if there was a huge spider? What if she fell in the shower and no one came looking for her?

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: 363636; width: 370px; padding-top: 30; padding-bottom: 30;] "No, no, no." Ray stomped on that student's idea immediately. "Do you know what I think of parody plays? They're too hard to do for a student of your caliber. Without the right comedic timing, I'd be essentially giving you permission to perform something your likely to fail." he told the student, who hung his head and murmured 'ok' before walking out. Being a teacher wasn't always about being the student's best friends. If he allowed that student to do a parody, a very challenging performance for even experienced actors, he didn't want to fail them for his own mistake of allowing a student to do out of their depth. He took his job very seriously, he trusted his own professional instincts. And he didn't allow students to walk all over him. As for his personal life, he had a few 'girlfriends' if you wanted to call them that. They were more like casual but regular dates with the typical kisses, hand-holding and intercourse. His parents were pleased that he was moving on from Lily but Ray had never taken the step to introduce another woman to them. He wasn't there yet.
So he was essentially keeping himself busy during the day and during the night. He was living somewhere else now, there was no use keeping a place that held memories of him and Lily. That was over, kaput. After class he wandered over to Starbucks and bought a tall caramel macchiato. He loved the taste of those, they were delicious. He was on his way home when he noticed his ex through the translucent glass outside the bakery. Sitting in the bakery, there she was. Staring at a cupcake. Nice to see that her life had become more exciting in his absence. At least she was alright. For all he knew she could've been hurt or damaged in some way. He knew Lily had never lived alone before so there could've been any number of mistakes that led to an accident.
He walked over to the bakery door and walked in slowly. He raised his eyebrows at how miserable she looked. Why didn't she look happy? "Who died?" he asked as he was standing next to her table. To avoid the nosy eyes of the other people at the bakery he took a seat.

She was often the girl that got caught day dreaming or left reality to ponder away in her own little world. Sometimes it was just so much nicer than dealing with the world around her. She'd learnt along time ago that things weren't how you wanted them to be when you were little. In fact she'd learnt that when she was about four years old. As much as some would complain, Lily sort of appreciated her knowledge. It made her appreciate the simple things in life that could make you smile and allowed you to find beauty in the smallest of things. She was definitely a simple life kind of girl but ofcourse there were the few things that even Lily needed. Like constant company. No one liked being the needy girl but she couldn't help it. She knew how to cook, clean and look after herself. That was fine. However, she didn't know how to be by herself or be left with just her own company. Not that she was a chatty girl anyways but it was always nice to know you weren't alone.
Her moment of self pity was interrupted by a familiar voice and all too suddenly she was snapped back to reality. Blue eyes looked up and met with Raymond's and she felt her stomach flip. Lily had no idea how to behave around him now. For along time Raymond had been her rock. He'd been all she ever really knew when it came to the male sex asides from her father and older brothers. He'd been the one to get her out of that horrible situation and for a long time he'd been her savior. No matter how badly he treated her, she always forgave him because without him she knew she was pretty much worthless. People always told her to get rid of him but how could she get rid of someone who had been so good to her? And just when she built up that courage? He knocked it back down and got to the point before she did.
"Died? No one?" she replied quietly, totally confused by the situation. "Oh, I get you. Sorry. Long day" she shook her head, feeling a little silly. How was she meant to act? Like she didn't care and that everything was okay? That would never work. Raymond knew her too well and Lily was never the type of girl to act overly happy or joyed. Everything she did was graceful, understated and almost mouse like. She didn't particularly want to talk to him. Her heart was still broken and she wasn't sure if it would ever mend. She knew she didn't want to be with him anymore but she was still struggling with such a big change. Taking another sip of her coffee, the smooth liquid calmed her just abit. "So, how have you been?" she asked, genuinely interested. There was no use being nasty to someone she'd loved for so long. Not that Lily could ever be nasty to anyone.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: 363636; width: 370px; padding-top: 30; padding-bottom: 30;] "More like 'how have you been?' I just came back from a class and I'm pretty happy. You, on the other hand, look miserable." he argued, making further observations. "I know you were never a huge display of human emotions but still. You look like things haven't gone your way." which was a true enough observation because he'd dated Lily for a while. He was never far off in determining her mood. At least she's feeding herself he thought, his eyes directed at the cupcakes. Two cupcakes, that was weird. He'd never seen her buy more than one at a time, then again if she were meeting somebody it'd make perfect sense. Was that what she was doing? Was there a deal on two cupcakes? Either way, he soon lost interest in wondering. She sipped her coffee calmly, which reminded Ray why he was out.
He brought his caramel macchiato to his lips while she drank hers. Look at him, having coffee with his ex. He felt very grown up, considering how she turned on him near the end of the relationship. He could feel a break-up looming and had ended it first. He didn't have a clue why she might've wanted to end it. Sure he played a little tonsil tennis with some other girls at a club but as far as he knew Lily didn't know about that. He'd always tried to act the perfect boyfriend in front of Lily, a boyfriend she might actually deserve rather than the sleazebag he actually was.
He was aware how he might be seen as a sleazebag, though it wasn't objective or absolute. Nothing was that simple in Ray's world. He could find complexities and contradictions in anything. For example, a confrontational discussion followed by a healthy debate on whether functionality of their relationship could be restored was a potential route Lily could've taken. They could've saved the relationship. "So honestly, how have you been?" he asked softly, knowing that Lily was deeply sensitive and could be emotionally affected easily. He wondered if he still had that effect on her.

Lily had never really experienced a break up before so she had no idea what the protocol was. Actually Raymond was the only guy she'd ever been involved with and for the most part of their relationship she'd been following his lead. Hell, she'd followed his lead all the way to Crystal Lakes and based her entire life off of him. Anyone else would have called that stupid but Lily had been convinced it was love. In reality it was a way out of a bad situation and for some time it had worked. That was until her entire life became about him. She was needy, one of those girls that latched on and followed their boyfriends around like a lost puppy but that was because she'd always felt she needed someone to tell her what to do. Lily wasn't confident with her own decisions. She'd been told her entire life that she was useless, boring and good for nothing so it was easier to follow the lead.
It was nice to hear that he was doing good. Ray had always been one of those confident people that made things happen in their lives. She envied that really and wished it had rubbed off onto her. For too many years though she'd concentrated on being the girlfriend instead of just being Lily. While she was happy for him, she still felt a pit of resentment forming in her stomach. Why was life so easy for him? He'd dragged her here and then decided to just leave her. She'd turned a blind eye every time she heard stories about him with other girls for long enough. She'd been good to him in her opinion. Always kept the house clean, cooked, encouraged him in his career and things were going good for him. Now here she was, all alone. She didn't even have her family anymore. It was quite unfair really but it was a choice she'd made. That's why seventeen year olds shouldn't have been making choices.
He made her feel pathetic, he honestly did. Like she was some miserable little girl who couldn't handle her own feelings and the big bad world when it actual fact, he was the on who had initially made her miserable. The breakup sucked, she'd heard they always did but her issue wasn't with that anymore, it was with what came next. Where was she even going in life? All she'd wanted was a sugar fix and now she was being dragged into some Ray ran therapy session. She didn't want to mope or tel him her problems she she smiled at him softly, running a hand through her long blonde locks. "I'm fine, honestly" Lily tried her hardest to lie, "Work's been great, the kids are always keeping me busy so there's not much time to think about anything else" she shrugged her shoulders. It was much simpler to keep to the basics and list the good things in her life. Then he wouldn't have to worry and she might actually start realizing what she had. "I just got the keys to my new apartment actually" she smiled a little more genuinely now, "I'm really happy with it to which is always a plus. So this weekend is dedicated to refurnishing it and making it a little cuter". She couldn't believe it, she actually sounded a little excited and she was. It could be fun having her own place where she could just stay home and listen to music or read without him coming home from the clubs. "So, are you still living in the old place or are you getting somewhere new?" she asked, genuinely curious if he'd be giving up their old apartment. Both of their pay cheques had turned it into quite a nice little place and it would be sort of sad to see some stranger move in. "Here, have this. I got roped into buying two" she pushed her extra cupcake in his direction.
